Located on Emerald Bay Lake Tahoe, Vikingsholm is one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the western region and, with historic details including hand-crafted iron work and a sod roof, harks back to medieval times in its design. Built by the Knight family starting in 1928, the building features hand-carved architectural details from locally harvested trees and locally quarried masonry for its foundation.
ARG Conservation Services was retained to repair the hand-carved fascia on the roof-ends. The wood itself had become extremely degraded over time and the carved design required replacement. ARG/CS researched replication methods including molding and casting replacement pieces, laser scanning and milling replicas, and hand carving replacements. In this instance, providing hand-carved replicas made from the same or similar species of wood, proved to the most cost effective and aesthetically pleasing solution. ARG/CS’s skilled sculptor, carpenter and wood carver, hand fabricated and installed new replacement wood segments that matched the original design and hand-carved aesthetic.
