Constructed in 1812, Mission San Luis Rey was the 18th of the twenty-one missions founded in California. With the exception of several restoration episodes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the majority of the adobe structure and architectural features are original.
ARG Conservation Services was retained by Old Mission San Luis Rey to supply project management services for the seismic retrofit of the mission’s historic main Church. These services included the development of a bid package with pre-existing construction documents, bid award, management during construction, and documentation of the project through its entirety.
During the seismic retrofit portion of the project, the opportunity was taken to rehabilitate the existing electrical, lighting, and low-voltage systems. These systems were designed and installed to meet the existing needs of the church while maintaining the historic integrity of the building. Design was conducted during the seismic retrofit construction, and the installation was performed following the completion of the retrofit.
In addition to the electrical rehabilitation, the opportunity was taken to carefully clean the interiors walls, reredos or retablo, and all of the church’s interior architectural features.
