The Mermaid, a painted steel and reinforced cast concrete sculpture by renowned pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, was installed in 1979 in front of the Jackie Gleason Theatre at the Miami Beach Conference Center. The sculpture depicts a reclining mermaid with adjoining clouds supported by sun rays. The sculpture sits in the center of a small pool and has an adjacent palm tree that is part of the design.
ARG Conservation Services (ARG/CS) was retained by the City of Miami Beach Department of Tourism and Culture to examine the Lichtenstein Mermaid sculpture and prepare a treatment plan and conceptual cost estimate for the Sculpture and surrounding pool. In addition, improvements to electrical and plumbing systems for the pool and minor landscaping changes were also investigated considered.
