Located at the corner of Pacific Street and Del Monte Avenue in Monterey, California, the Monterey Mural is a festive, 36-foot ceramic tile mural by the contemporary artist Guillermo “Bill” Granizo. The mural was installed in 1984 and depicts events from California history.

When ARG Conservation Services was retained to assess conditions and implement treatment of the mural, many of its tiles were loose and some had fallen from the building. The grout was in poor condition, several tiles were cracked, and both the mural and the supporting wall had become vulnerable to water infiltration. ARG Conservation Services replaced the grout and missing tiles, repaired cracked tiles, installed a water barrier along the top of the Mural, and made recommendations for future intervention to improve drainage and ensure the longevity of the piece.
