Treatment Recommendations for Multiple Sculptures
Market Street Monuments
San Francisco, CA

The Monuments of Market Street consist of six of the over 100 monuments that beautify the City of San Francisco. The monuments are a testament to early California history and 19th and 20th century ingenuity. They include: Simon Bolivar, the Pioneer Monument, Lotta’s Fountain, Admission Day Monument, Mechanics Monument and California Volunteers.

In 2006, ARG Conservation Services reviewed documentation available at the City Arts Commission office to better determine the life expectancy of certain treatments in the high-traffic context of Market Street. ARG/CS then surveyed each monument to assess conditions and priorities for treatment.

Condition details, recommendations for further treatment and on-going maintance, and estimates of labor hours were outlined for each monument. Expanding on the study, ARG/CS provided recommendations for the development of a comprehensive Master Preservation Plan for all city monuments to aid in long-term budgetary and maintenance planning.
